Merete Fredholm graduated as veterinarian (DVM) in 1983 from the Royal veterinary and Agricultural University, Copenhagen, Denmark. She obtained a Ph.D. degree in animal genetics in 1986, and was awarded the Dr.Vet.Sci. degree in 1996. Her main research focus is identification of genes involved in diseases and production traits in domestic animal species.
Together with an international team of researchers she had identified the mutation that causes polyneuropathy in Alaskan Malamut and developed a DNA test for this disease.
