Shelley Turner - AustraliaBIOGRAPHY: I first became involved in the breed when I purchased my first dog, who was also my first champion, in 1989. Not long after that I became interested in the sport of sled dog racing, and got involved in what was the early days of dryland mushing in Australia.  I competed successfully in the early days and now leave the racing to my husband Merv Turner.  Whilst we have also owned Schipperkes, Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Huskies, and Shetland Sheepdogs, the Alaskan Malamute remains our focus.
Our dogs have achieved working titles in all activities, with one dog, Kataku Avalanche WTD WWPD WWPDX earning the coveted titles of AMCV Weight Pull Dog of The Year five years in a row. Our dogs have appeared in a number of television advertisements and shows, being popular with the TV world wranglers due to the combination of beauty and brains.
I was a founding member of the Southern Cross Sled Dog Club, the 2nd independent sled dog club in Australia, and have been involved in the Alaskan Malamute Club, Victoria Inc., Australia’s oldest and largest Malamute Club, holding various positions including Vice President (Breed Welfare). I currently hold the position of Health Officer.  I have also been a member of the AMCA since 1993.
I enjoy conformation showing, and have achieved great success. Perhaps our most well known dog, Multi BIS Multi BISS Grand Ch Kataku Fire Storm (AI), aka Thor, has been rewarded with top honours at many of Australia’s biggest shows, including one of the largest and most prestigious shows in the country the Sydney Royal Show. But our greatest achievement lies in breeding Thor’s dam, Ch Kataku Fire N Fury, who has produced multiple Grand Champions and 3 BISS winning dogs who have 6 Specialties  between them, and another 2 Runner Up in Specialty wins as well. Our philosophy as a kennel is to breed beautiful, sound, healthy dogs of true working type.
I am an ANKC licensed judge for the Utility Group and a trainee for our working group. I have judged throughout Australia and New Zealand, and judged the Working Dog Showcase at an AMCA Specialty.
